Conservation at Cerney Wick
In the summers of 2024 and 2025 we were invited to consult on the Hills Quarry Products Mammoth Graveyard excavation. We were both team leaders of the 2023 excavation so we were familiar with the site and project leaders Sally and Neville Hollingworth thought we would be ideal to reprise our roles.

As part of the role, myself and Alison supervised volunteers and assisted the management of site operations. Of the two of us I was on site for the entirety of the excavation and, due to my experience as a museum curator, took on the role of Field Curator overseeing the cateloguing of specimens while also assisting with conservation. Alison was Conservation Consultant on site creating conservation procedures and guiding their implementation.

- Only using museum grade chemicals
- Dealing with humidity and heat
- Procedure for drying in a controlled manner
- Jurassic -> drowning the wood in paraloid/leaving the ammonites untouched
